Art (def): something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings.
As a musician and as a person, I like to think of myself as an artist. We are all artists in a way. We create things, we use imagination, we love and crave for beauty. Art can be used to express emotion, to express needs, to showcase skill. It is so many things. It is a part of what it is to be human. I believe it has intrinsic value (we just NEED it, it's important) and extrinsic value (we USE it, we make it important). It helps us to see beauty, or sometimes it helps us to question important issues. I get very excited when ArPrize rolls around here in Grand Rapids. This year it is ArPrize 8, 'a radically open international art competition decided by public vote and expert jury that takes place each fall in Grand Rapids -- and it's all free and open to the public." The city comes alive with locals, visitors, and people of all ages and backgrounds. For a month, we all get to experience the imagination and skill of those that have used their time to create something. The art ranges from 2D, 3D, installations, and time-based entries. All art forms are represented, including music. Yesterday, I was able to go to Frederik Meijer Gardens and take in some of the entries. Be sure to check out some of the venues if you live here. Also, to students and parents: The Grand Rapids Symphony will be performing at the UICA next week with free concerts!
