On Friday, April 20th, 2018 The Grand Rapids Symphony performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. I was able to go along. What a fun and memorable experience! Carnegie Hall is one of the most historic venues in the world for Classical Music.
Put all of your superstitions aside, Friday the 13th was a great day for me this month! I was able to go with a great friend and fellow violinist to hear renowned performer Ray Chen and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Fun Facts: DSO The DSO, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, first performed in 1887. In April 2011 the DSO launched 'Live from Orchestra Hall', it is the first free webcast series to be put out by an orchestra & "In 1934, the DSO became the nation's first official radio broadcast orchestra, performing for millions of Americans over the airwaves on the Ford Symphony Hour national radio show until 1942." -DSO website Ray Chen Ray Chen was born in Taiwan and raised in Australia. He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation. Apart from this great concert, we were also able to explore Belle Isle and the Detroit Institute of Arts. The DIA's collection is among the top six of museums in the United States, with about 66,000 works. "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

More info HERE. On Thursday, August 17th I was able to see and hear The Piano Guys at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre with a dear friend. It was an amazing experience for two reasons, the setting & the performance.
First off, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a venue like none other! It is a venue built into the unique sandstone cliff formations just 15 miles west of Denver, Colorado. At 6,450 above sea level it is a zone between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, very different terrain than that of Grand Rapids, Michigan at 640 ft. above sea level. The land for the Red Rocks Amphitheatre was purchased in 1927 and formally dedicated in June of 1941 and has a capacity for 9,525 people. The rock formations are beautiful and at night you are able to see the city lights of Denver. During this particular concert, we even saw two shooting stars in the night sky! It was absolutely stunning. The cliffs are made of Aztec Sandstone. The stone is often red due to iron oxide - rust, and other minerals in the rock. As for the performance, The Piano Guys are one of those classically trained groups of musicians that are being innovative with their performances. I love that they use their knowledge of old and new and find a way to harmonize them together, literally and figuratively. They are not only gifted musicians, but they are also talented and funny stage performers sure to keep a captive audience. I was intrigued to find out that their group was formed as they tried to find new and interesting ways to sell pianos by creating YouTube videos of performances in unexpected places. What a great success story & what a great experience! Enjoy some pictures :) Larissa Hello Everyone!

Larissa April is almost here, & that means the Spring Recital is quickly approaching! I am so proud of all of my students and how much they have learned in such a short period of time. This is also why I am excited for the upcoming recital on Monday, April 24th at 6-7PM in Holland at the MidTown Center.
I would like to invite and remind all students that the last Group Class before the recital will be Friday, April 21st from 5-5:30PM. The fee is $5. All ages and levels are welcome. This group class will be different from the preceding, because we will be going over recital etiquette. It will be a great run-through before performance day. Please put this in your calendars and email me with any questions. Today I was able to hear the very talented Nicola Benedetti and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. The performance was spectacular! What a great day. Enjoy some pictures of the experience and of the University of Notre Dame's Campus where the performance was held. Last evening my students performed in a fantastic recital! As we approach the close of 2016, it was a great way to wrap up the season. Everyone has learned SO much these past few months and it was a joy to watch them showcase all of their knowledge. Performing for the first time for a large audience is a nerve wracking thing to do, and for many of my students, this was their first or second recital. So, I am very proud of their courage and dedication! The more they perform, the more comfortable they will feel.
Thank you also to all of the families and parents who support these children and provide them an opportunity to learn a musical instrument. So thank you for your support, your time, and your dedication. It all brings me so much happiness each week to pour into these kids' lives. Matthew Heyboer (cello) and I had a great time collaborating on this joint violin/cello recital. We performed Passacaglia by Handel-Halvorssen to close out the recital. It was a lot of fun to pull together this difficult piece together from our repertoire. It has taken us years of practice to be able to perform that piece of music, and we hope it was a source of motivation and encouragement to our students to show them what they can accomplish with hard work. Again, I am so proud of you all! Thank you and I am excited to continue working with you as the New Year approaches. Larissa My friend Matthew Heyboer and I will be performing the next two Sundays from 2-3PM at Woodland Mall in Barnes and Noble.
It is going to be a fun and festive time. We hope you stop by during your Christmas and Holiday Shopping to grab a coffee and listen to some great music. Larissa This Fall I began offering my first violin group classes & what a fun experience they have turned out to be. I am excited to see how they will grow this coming semester as we step into 2017. Group classes are a great way for kids, parents/guardians, and students of all ages to get together in an encouraging environment and use what they have been learning in their private studies in a team setting. Parents can bounce ideas off of other parents, and students can look to others in the class for advice or as a source of motivation. With so many different ages and skill levels in the room, everyone learns something new at each class, even me! This coming Winter/Spring I am hoping to see more and more of my students participating in these enriching activities. If not in an orchestra or other music group, these classes allow students to learn the skills of teamwork, listening, and following that are vital parts of being a musician. |
